RE: SB 707 (Wolk) Gun-Free School Zone

Dear Governor Brown:

The American Academy of Pediatrics, California (AAP-CA), representing nearly 5,000 primary care and subspecialty    pediatricians statewide supports SB 707 (Wolk). This bill would ban those with concealed-weapons permits from bringing their firearms onto college and K-12 campuses without permission from school officials.

Schools, including college campuses, exemplify the success of restriction on access to guns. Because of stringent constraints on guns, they are safer than many other areas in America that lack such regulation.  Even so, the numerous high-profile campus shootings beg the question of how can we best keep children and young adults safe in schools.

In Firearm-related Injuries Affecting the Pediatric Population (2012), the AAP affirms that the most effective measure to prevent suicide, homicide, and unintentional firearm-related injuries to children and adolescents is the absence of guns from homes and communities. As pediatricians, we support the strongest possible legislative and regulatory approaches to prevent firearm injuries and deaths.

Therefore, we respectfully urge you to sign SB 707 (Wolk), as it directly aligns with our goals to protect a child’s safety and wellbeing.

We thank you for your leadership on behalf of children and families across California.
