RE: SB 1138 (Skinner) Healthy Food Options
AAP-CA Position: Support

Dear Senator Skinner,

The American Academy of Pediatrics, California (AAP-CA), representing over 5,000 California pediatricians, strongly supports your proposed legislation SB 1138 (Skinner) to require hospitals and prisons to offer plant-based meals.

California has more youths confined in its juvenile correctional system than any other state in the country While many public institutions in California already offer plant-based meal options, it is not yet required of prisons and hospitals. Offering a plant-based diet would help respect the religious and dietary needs, reduce our carbon footprint and save money. A plant-based diet may also be healthier, depending upon available other options.

Pediatrician members of AAP California Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4 statewide strongly support your proposed legislation SB 1138. Thank you for your public service and leadership on behalf of the health and wellbeing of children, youth, and families in California.
