RE: AB 329: Comprehensive Sex Education (Weber)
AAP-CA Position: Support

Dear Senate Education Committee,

I am writing on behalf of the American Academy of Pediatrics, California (AAP-CA) representing over 5,000 California pediatricians to let you know that we strongly support AB 329 (Weber).

AB 329 (Weber) would update outdated information, strengthen existing requirements, and integrate sexual health education into the current HIV prevention mandate for California schools.

Given the myriad of serious sexually transmitted diseases, including chlamydia and syphilis and a rise in teenage pregnancies, equal access across California to comprehensive, school-based sexual health education is essential.  AB 329 (Weber) is especially critical for low-income communities, who experience inequitable access to health care.

Finally, AB 329 (Weber) will also bring California into compliance with the current HIV prevention mandate, ensuring our youth have access to comprehensive sex education, fundamental to understanding the prevention of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV.

Pediatricians urge your AYE vote on SB 329 (Weber).

Thank you for your public service and leadership on behalf of the health and well being of children, youth, and families in California.
