Proposition 17 would permit an otherwise eligible person who is on parole for the conviction of a felony to vote. Many factors influence successful reintegration into community upon returning home from prison. Strong family support and stable employment are key. Civic participation also creates a sense of ownership and self-determination. Barring parolees from the right to vote impacts communities of color disproportionately due to bias in our criminal justice system. Finally, children learn from the behavior of their parents. Permitting an individual on parole to vote will support their children in eventually engaging in democracy.
